My grandmother's paintings

I get a lot of my style from paintings or artists that I admire. I like to create paintings that can be real.

I've included some of my grandmother's paintings in this post that have inspired me. The images aren't high quality but you're still able to see the painting.

Inspiration

Most of my inspiration comes from a deep feeling that I get, almost like a spark. I can't describe it well but some action, event, color, image gets stuck in my head and I begin to obsess over it. The obsession generates my inspiration for a painting and pull out my materials and start creating. I don't typically pencil in my paintings, I usually let the feeling guide what comes next.

The same feeling happens with photography - I see an image that I want to remember and I snap a few pictures at the right angle until I'm able to recreate the feeling when I see it again. I love colors too, certain colors give me a joyful feeling - that same obsession I get when I get inspired to paint. I want to generate more of that feeling so I've started this website as a means for inspiration. I also want to paint more often, like my grandmother did.

My grandmother was an artist

My grandmother (on my mom's side) was a self-taught, brilliant artist. Her artwork is inspiring, detailed and full of life. I love how she captures the movement and light in each painting.

When I was growing up, my sisters and I would spend our summers in Ecuador which is where my grandmother lived. We would spend half of our time with my mom's side of the family and the other half with my dad's side. My grandparent's home was filled with her paintings. In the garage, she had a room dedicated to her artwork.

One time when I was about 12 years old, she let me help with one of her paintings of an angel looking over two children on a cliff. I was nervous and methodical with each stroke of the paintbrush. I carefully applied the pink paint on the canvas to color the little boy's dress. I was hooked.
